An 8-year-old Coventry boy is receiving praise for alerting his parents that their neighbor’s home had caught fire on Saturday morning.
“I was just watching some YouTube on my tablet and I heard the smoke alarm over here,” the boy, named Nicholas, told NBC 10 hours after the fire on Town Farm Road. “I looked outside and I saw smoke coming from an open window.”
The youth said he then alerted his mom, Susan Jensen, who said she proceeded to run across the street to bang on the door of the home while simultaneously calling 911.
Jensen said her knocks awakened her neighbor’s son, who told her he had been taking a nap and had no idea the home was burning.
“I think the smoke inhalation had made him a bit woozy,” Jensen said. “I dragged him by the arm, pulled him out.”
Meanwhile, Jensen said her husband unsuccessfully tried to use a garden hose and fire extinguisher on the flames which had already spread into the home’s attic.
Firefighters from the Central Coventry Fire District arrived soon after and knocked down the blaze.
In the end, the home suffered extensive damage but nobody was hurt.
Homeowner Lisa Lachance said she credits her young neighbor, Nicholas, for his quick thinking.
“My son might not be alive,” she said. “He’s got really good eyesight, because it’s hard to see through all these trees. So, for him to be able to see that - that was pretty amazing.”
Lachance told NBC 10 she believes most of her personal possessions, including family photos, will be able to be salvaged.
The American Red Cross is assisting.
A GoFundMe page has also been setup in support of the family.
