Piano music is once again wafting from Golden Gate Park.
After a year-long coronavirus-inspired hiatus, twelve pianos have been reintroduced to the San Francisco Botanical Garden, thrilling city residents who missed the fall tradition commonly known as "Flower Piano."
For many pianists, Flower Piano provides a creative space to express oneself without fear of judgement from others. "People here are less picky," a San Francisco local said. "In a concert hall, if you make a mistake people don’t forgive you. Here people are much more forgiving, they just enjoy it."
Flower Piano became an annual tradition after its start in 2015. The event even has the power to inspire more than just the love of music, a couple who originally met at the festival told KCBS Radio.
"Flower piano is a very magical event," they said. "It definitely cultivated what is now a really magical thing between us."
Garden Executive Director Stephanie Linder explained the event had to be canceled last year, and since we're not out of the pandemic yet, there are safety protocols in place. "You do have to sanitize your hands before and after play and if you’re in a crowded situation, the health department does recommend a mask," she said.
The Botanical Garden pianos will be available until Tuesday. Featured performances are scheduled, as well as multiple opportunities for anyone to play.
