54-year-old man drowns in rough waters off Brick Beach I

BRICK – A 54-year-old man drowned in rough waters off Brick Beach I Saturday afternoon, according to police.

The Brick Township Police Department responded to a call about a swimmer in distress around 12:30 p.m.

Two surfers had noticed the man drowning and were able to lift his head out of the water. However, the surfers could not get the man to land, according to Sgt. James Kelly.

The coast guard was requested to pull the man out of the water, and they transported him to the Coast Guard Station in Point Pleasant Beach.

Point Pleasant Beach EMS performed CPR and took the man to Hackensack Meridian Hospital in Brick where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.

According to Kelly, the name of the man is being withheld for the family’s privacy.

The Brick Township Police Department, the Coast Guard, the Point Pleasant Beach EMS as well as the Breton Woods Fire Company, the Pioneer Hose Fire Company and the Laurelton Fire Company responded to the incident. According to Kelly, Detective Thomas Cooney of the Brick Township Police Department is investigating the incident.
