Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Charleston Rambo had the breakout game expected of him when he transferred from Oklahoma during the offseason. Rambo tied the Miami program record with 12 receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Willie Smith had 12 receptions in 1984 and Philip Dorsett 12 in 2012.

Mike Harley was second on the Hurricanes with four receptions for 51 yards on Saturday. Several of Rambo’s yards came after the catch. Rambo tied the Miami single-game reception record in the third quarter but did not have a catch in the fourth. The Miami Hurricanes lost 38-14 against Michigan State despite Rambo’s heroics.

Rambo scored both of Miami’s TDs on Saturday. The first TD for Rambo came on a three-yard reception from D’Eriq King. Rambo was so wide open in the back of the end zone he did not have to move to make the reception on fourth down. The second Rambo TD came in double coverage to cut the lead to 17-14.

Rambo equaled his season total with 12 receptions on Saturday, nearly doubled the 85 yards he had entering the game and scored his first two touchdowns with Miami. The 12 receptions eclipsed the career-high Rambo set with seven but for only 33 yards in the 2021 season opener against Alabama.

Rambo also set a career-high in yards surpassing the 122 that he had against Texas Tech for Oklahoma in 2019. Saturday was the second time Rambo had two receiving touchdowns. Rambo reached the end zone twice against UCLA In 2019 and Missouri State last season. It appears King found his go-to receiver for 2021.

Harley who was the go-to receiver last season has struggled through three games in 2021. Rambo was brought to Miami to give the Hurricanes more of a downfield threat. Four of the receptions Rambo had on Saturday went for at least 17 yards. Miami needs Rambo to stretch opposing defenses.

In a disheartening loss on Saturday, Rambo was a bright spot. The Miami offense has a lot to work out. It took Rambo three games, but his breakout on Saturday is encouraging for the remainder of the 2021 season. The 156 yards was the most by a Miami WR since Harley had 170 last season against Virginia.
