BERKELEY — The pregame injury report for Cal prior to its game against Sacramento State included an unexpected piece of news.

Bears head coach Justin Wilcox underwent surgery Tuesday to address a previous injury that became aggravated, and will work the game from the sidelines with the aid of crutches.

No word from Cal on the specifics of Wilcox’s injury or surgery.

Wilcox, 44, played defensive back at Oregon (1996-99) before beginning his coaching career. He is in his fifth season at Cal, which was taking an 0-2 record into the 1 p.m. kickoff against the Hornets (1-1), an FCS program coached by former Cal quarterback Troy Taylor.
