Wayne Rooney revealed he learned about Derby’s slide into administration while he was watching sports news channels on television.
The Rams are heading for an automatic 12-point deduction that will take them bottom of the Championship, with further penalties possible due to a separate dispute with the EFL regarding spending rules.
Rooney, the former England captain, has been in charge at Pride Park for a turbulent nine months and had no idea of the latest crisis point – and neither did the players.

‘I saw it on Sky,’ Rooney told Sky Sports News. ‘Obviously with the news breaking it was difficult for the players, the staff and for the fans. A very difficult position we find ourselves in.
‘My job is to get the players playing. All we can do is play with a lot of pride and my job is to bring some dignity back to the football club.
‘I've spoken to (chief executive) Stephen Pearce after it but initially had seen it on TV. I haven't spoken with Mel. I'm sure he's got other things on his mind.
‘The squad this morning was a bit flat because the players had no information, they've seen it on Sky as well.’
