EastEnders fans know that the Gray Atkins (Toby Alexander Smith) storyline has been ongoing for a while now, with viewers eagerly awaiting the moment he gets to pay for his crimes, and hoping that Whitney Dean figures it out before she's next.

Shona McGarty, who has played Whitney on the long-running soap since 2008, has now opened up about her fears for her character and has offered teasers as to what will happen next.

Speaking to Inside Soap, McGarty said: "I don't know where this storyline is going and I keep wanting to ask the writers because I'm just so excited to see what's going to happen. As a viewer and a fan, I'm loving it."

Gray recently killed Whitney's fiance Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) and she has no idea: "She's getting close to him and she still has no idea that he killed Kush! I am a bit worried about her. Although Whitney is confident, she's still quite vulnerable after Kush's death – and Gray is charming, isn't he?"

McGarty explained a bit about Whitney's thinking, saying that she "felt a bit sorry for him" at first, and now "can imagine this fantasy life with Gray and the kids."

The actress, and fans who come up to her in the street, want Whitney "to be the one to rumble Gray" and expose him for his crimes.

Though there are no details as to whether McGarty's wish will come true, EastEnders bosses Kate Oates and Jon Sen have confirmed that Gray's downfall will be coming very soon – hopefully before Whitney becomes his next victim.

Oates told Digital Spy and other media: "Gray hasn't been as clever as he thinks. Smoking guns are all over the Square, just waiting to be found. Gray's downfall awaits...".

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
