Ohio officials are MIA when it comes to the mask mandate needed to protect our children

With COVID-19 cases in school-age children increasing by 44% in one week, as per Gov. Mike DeWine on Sept. 14, and with Ohio children’s hospitals pleading for a mask mandate in schools, it is time for our leaders to step up.

The governor should stop hiding behind a possible state legislative override of the mandate after 30 days (”DeWine blames GOP for lack of mask mandate,” Sept. 15). Ohio’s Department of Health director, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, has the ability to issue a public health order in conjunction with Gov. DeWine declaring a state of emergency. This would give our children at least a month’s cushion to bring down case numbers, a month that brings us closer to the time when 5- to 12-year-olds can be vaccinated. Until then, I, for one, do not wish to hear from either man.

Dr. Sandra Cobb,
