Tennessee-based Marble City Opera is set to present “Lily; her life, his music” on Oct. 29 and 30, 2021.

The showcase, which will be presented at the Flying Anvil Theater in Knoxville, will star mezzo-soprano, Audrey Babcock, alongside pianist Ray Fellman. James Marvel will direct the performance.

“Lily” is a one-woman musical drama featuring music by Kurt Weill that showcases the story of cabaret singer Lily Weiss as she journeys from cabarets of 1930s pre-war Berlin to Paris and eventually the United States.

“We have all been through a collective trauma. Healing may be through music alone for some, but I hope this story can be a vehicle for the audience. There is something visceral about Weill’s music and the various poets he set in song. The themes share a tone – Harsh. Gritty. True. No frills. Nothing extra. Raw,” said Babcock, who created the show, in a press release. “Lily suffers at the hands of circumstance but she is a survivor first and foremost. I feel like stories of the Phoenix rising from the ash will help us all find, harness, and ride our own grit off into the dawn of what comes next. Art should elevate, escalate or at least illicit emotion…if we could all just feel a little more – together in community if safely possible –  perhaps there is a way to bridge what divides us.”
