If you commit a crime in Michigan, you might get a Ford Mustang Mach-E police SUV on your tail soon. To keep law and order on the streets, Michigan's police force is trialing a police version of the electric SUV on September 18 and 19 as part of its 2022 Model Year Police Evaluation. It's part of a pilot program Ford is running to see if electric cars can cope with the demands of intensive police work.

The police Mustang Mach-E is finished in a blue police livery but isn't fitted with any flashing emergency lights. Ford also built a separate Mustang Mach-E concept for the UK's police force to trial earlier this month.

Compared to the US version, the UK concept features more extensive modifications including a light bar that connects to the 12-volt battery.

Ford hasn't released any specifications for the Mustang Mach-E police concept, but as you would expect it appears to be based on the high-spec GT Performance Edition model. With AWD and two electric motors producing a combined 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque, the GT Performance Edition will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, so good luck trying to outrun it. Despite its performance, the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition will last up 260 miles according to EPA estimates.

Other upgrades for the Performance Edition include 15-inch front brakes with red Brembo calipers, Pirelli summer tires, and MagneRide adaptive dampers.

We'll likely see more police electric cars hit the streets for evaluation as Ford ramps up its electrification strategy. As part of its $30 billion investment into electrification, Ford says it will "explore all-electric, purpose-built law enforcement vehicles" that could replace combustion-powered cop cars like the Ford Explorer Police Interceptor and Dodge Charger. Demand for electric vehicles by law enforcement is increasing worldwide as electric police cars would require significantly lower maintenance and fuel costs.
