BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons volleyball team (3-6) will host the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (5-3) on Sunday, Sept. 19, in the season's first match at the Stroh Center. The match will serve as the finale of an array of BGSU Athletics events over the 2021 Homecoming Weekend.

This will be the final regular-season non-conference match for the Falcons, who open Mid-American Conference play next weekend.

Falcon Facts
  • The Falcons opened the season at Butler University, competing in the Top Dawg Challenge. In their second match of the weekend, the Falcons defeated the host Bulldogs in four sets. This victory marked the 150th career win at BGSU for head coach Danijela Tomic. In the third set, senior Katie Kidwell set a new program record by recording her 444th career assist.
  • BGSU also participated in the Shamrock Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. BGSU finished 2-1, sweeping Notre Dame and beating Milwaukee in five sets before falling to Cincinnati in five sets. Junior Petra Indrova and senior Katelyn Meyer were named to the Shamrock Invitational All-Tournament Team.
  • In addition to earning Shamrock Invitational All-Tournament honors, Indrova was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week. Joining her as a player of the week was senior Hanna Laube, who was selected MAC East Setter of the Week.

Series Info
Bowling Green holds a 15-6 series advantage over the Golden Grizzlies. The Falcons outlasted the Golden Grizzlies in their most recent match, winning in five sets in 2019. All five sets finished with a deficit of four or less, with the Falcons taking the decisive fifth set, 15-13. Current Falcons Petra Indrova (19 kills), Katie Kidwell (six blocks), and Julia Walz (21 digs) were key for the Orange and Brown. For Oakland, current players Jamie Walling (25 kills) and Madison Ross (34 assists, 14 digs) topped the box score.

Opponent Information
Oakland currently stands at 5-3, with two matches on their schedule before they play the Falcons. The Golden Grizzlies play today at 2:30 p.m. against Central Michigan, then at 7 p.m. tonight against Michigan State. Both games are part of the Green & White Tournament Classic, the fourth invitational Oakland has participated in this season. They traveled to Notre Dame for the Golden Dome Invitational, hosted the Golden Grizzlies Invitational, then won all three matches at the DePaul Invitational.

Oakland has defeated two MAC teams, Akron and Eastern Michigan.

Coach Tomic's Take
"We are excited to play at home after three grueling weeks on the road. Our team loves to play in front of our Falcon fans, so we hope many of them will show their support on Sunday and beyond. It's also special that we are playing at home during Homecoming weekend when we will welcome some of our BGVB alumnae back on campus.

We got better this week because our team responded well to the challenging practices. We have an opportunity to show our improvement and bounce back against an excellent Oakland team before we open the MAC play at Akron next week."

Up Next
The Falcons will open MAC play next weekend with a series against Akron. The Falcons will head east to face the Zips at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, followed by a 5 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 25. The following weekend, Bowling Green returns to the Stroh to host Buffalo. The Orange and Brown will be in action at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2.
