Prep football roundup: Davis tops Syracuse on 40-yard Hail Mary as time expires

KAYSVILLE — Jackson Stevens threw a 40-yard, Hail Mary touchdown pass to Ty Hoagland in the end zone as time expired in the fourth quarter and Davis High football beat Syracuse 26-20 on Friday night.

The Darts (3-3, 1-1 Region 1) went 11 plays and 94 yards on their final drive of the game, recovering a Titans’ (4-2, 0-2) fumble at the 6-yard line.

Stevens threw for 260 yards and Hoagland had 110 receiving yards. Davis running back Dakoda Kempthorne rushed for 97 yards and two scores. Gage Butler made two field goals for Davis.

Syracuse quarterback Jake Hopkins threw for 171 yards and a touchdown pass to Chandler Christensen, who had 109 receiving yards. Bennett Carlson kicked two field goals for the Titans.

FARMINGTON 27, LAYTON 20 (OT)

LAYTON — Farmington’s defense stopped Layton on fourth down in overtime to pull off a road win after scoring 15 unanswered points. FHS (3-3, 2-1 Region 1) took the lead in overtime on a short touchdown run by Boston Reinhold.

Layton (4-2, 2-1) led 17-3 at one point after two touchdown passes by Garrett Gifford to Kyren Sprague and Daniel Hernandez.

MORGAN 41, JUAN DIEGO 28

MORGAN — Morgan scored 32 unanswered points to turn a 28-9 deficit into a 41-28 win against Juan Diego to open 3A North region play.

Juan Diego led 14-0 in the first quarter and 28-9 in the second, but the Trojans (4-2, 1-0 3A North) took the lead for good with a Will Lance touchdown run in the fourth quarter to go ahead 34-28. Lance ran for another score a short time later to put the game away.

Morgan quarterback Nicholas Despain threw a touchdown pass to Gavin Turner and Despain caught a TD pass as well from Tate Nelson. Beau Johnson made a field goal for MHS.

NORTHRIDGE 19, WOODS CROSS 14

WOODS CROSS — Northridge scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and got a late interception to beat Woods Cross on the road and move into a tie for first place in Region 5.

Trailing 14-7, Northridge’s (5-1, 2-0 Region 5) AJ Tillman ran for a short touchdown, but the Knights missed the extra point.

They got the ball back and Maximus Fonoti-Maikui threw a TD pass to Zach Smith with 3:53 left for the final score. Fonoti-Maikui and Smith connected on a 67-yard scoring strike to give NHS an early 7-0 lead.

Shane Schwenke ripped off a long TD run for the Wildcats (0-6, 0-2) and Canton Naegle threw a touchdown pass in the fourth to put WX up 14-7.

BOX ELDER 42, VIEWMONT 21

BOUNTIFUL — Viewmont nearly had two 100-yard rushers and won the yardage battle, but Box Elder used two huge pass plays to go up 21-0 and never look back.

Cooper Stevenson threw touchdown passes of 41 yards (to Tallin Chappell) and 91 yards (to Cole Mortensen), the latter to open the second quarter, for the 21-0 Box Elder (3-3, 1-1 Region 5) lead.

A pair of Miles McGrath 5-yard touchdown runs got Viewmont (2-4, 0-2) to within 21-14 midway through the third quarter, but it got no closer.

Dax Sumko scored on runs of 1 and 30 yards for the Bees and, after Viewmont answered with a score from Elias Uesele, Stevenson ran in a 7-yard touchdown with 1:52 left.

Stevenson threw 8 of 11 for 183 yards for Box Elder. Sumko finished with 85 yards on 14 carries.

Uesele ran 22 times for 110 yards and Luke Jacobs 13 times for 96 yards to lead Viewmont. Jacobs also threw 9 of 18 for 175 yards and Mike Matuli hauled in six catches for 102 yards.

LEHI 31, FREMONT 17

PLAIN CITY — Fremont trailed 21-3 early in a non-region loss to Lehi. Hayden Hall scored a rushing touchdown and Cannon Koford found Kyler Kotter for a passing score. Dax Iverson made a field goal for the Silverwolves (3-3).

LOGAN 46, BEAR RIVER 42

Garland — Logan scored a touchdown in the final minute of the game to hand Bear River a loss in a wild shootout in the Bears’ (0-6, 0-2 Region 11) first home game of the year.

Alec Callister gave the Bears a 42-39 lead with a 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Callister had earlier given BR a 28-25 lead with another long touchdown run. Ryker Jeppsen also scored on a long TD run to put Bear River ahead 35-32.

The Grizzlies led 18-0 in the first half, but Bear River was within 25-21 at halftime. Logan returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.

Callister finished with 250 yards on 17 carries and the Bears totaled 354 rushing yards.

UNION 37, OGDEN 20

ROOSEVELT — Union’s early 17-3 lead was too much for Ogden in a road loss to open 3A North Region play.

Adam Wilson kicked field goals of 37 and 42 yards for the Tigers (2-4, 0-1 3A North). Kale Adams threw a touchdown pass to Lincoln Barnes and Yahir Morales ran for a 1-yard touchdown for Ogden.
