FOUR TO BE INDUCTED INTO CUB HALL OF HONOR

Three former outstanding Brenham Cub football players and a former football coach will be enshrined in the Brenham High School football Hall of Honor at a luncheon next month.

Trason Maresh, Erich Habermehl and Ryan Roberson will be enshrined in the hall of honor, along with former Brenham coach Tim Oehrlein, on October 29th at the Blinn College Student Center.

Also being recognized this year is former Brenham High athletic trainer Bob Purl, who passed away in July.  Purl spent his working years involved in education.  While he was a certified athletic trainer, coaching was his passion.  He coached in Brenham, Klein, Elgin, Bellville and Alvin.

The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m., and former honorees and guests are encouraged to gather in the student center beginning at 11 a.m.  Honorees will also be recognized prior to the kickoff of the Cubs game that evening.

Tickets are $25 each and they are available from any member of the committee or at Brenham National Bank, Bank of Brenham, the Brenham ISD athletic office or the BISD administration office.  Members of the committee are Val Kiecke, Charlie Matejowsky, Tommie Sullivan, Melvin Ehlert Jr., Delbert Boeker, Eliot Allen, Eddie Van Dyke, Jerry Newman, Jim Moser, Derek Hall, Randy Weidemann and Michael Groves.

Tickets and tables are limited, so anyone looking to attend is encouraged to reserve their seats as soon as possible.

Trason Maresh

Trason Maresh

A 1993 graduate of Brenham High, Maresh earned four letters with the Cubs playing on the offensive line.

He earned all-district, all-state, and all-American accolades in football and was selected his senior year to be a player in the Texas All Star game in Fort Worth.

Maresh was given a full scholarship to play football at Texas A&M University, but medical reasons would not allow him to finish his dream to play for the Fightin’ Texas Aggies.

He graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in wildlife/fisheries. He was living and working in Austin before he passed away in January 2010.

Erich Habermehl

Erich Habermehl

Habermehl emerged as an athlete at an early age playing soccer, then graduating to baseball, basketball and eventually football in the 8th grade.

During his senior year, Habermehl was named captain of the football team and played quarterback for the Brenham Cubs.

He was named to the 1991 Associated Press Sports Editors' Class 4A Team as an honorable mention after completing 80 of 169 passes for 1,238 yards and a then school record 18 touchdowns.

After graduation in 1992 he found his way to Baylor University where he earned a degree in Health Science Studies.

Habermehl currently resides in Tyler with his wife, Amanda; and two sons Davis and Reid.

Ryan Roberson

Ryan Roberson

Roberson was a three-year football letterman for the Cubs where he contributed any way he could as a two-way starter helping Brenham post a 33-6 record (19-0 district) and win three consecutive district championships.

He was ranked the nation's second-best fullback by Rivals and tabbed one of the state's top 10 linebackers by Dave Campbell's Texas Football his senior year.

Roberson earned his first career start as a sophomore in a “shoot-out” in the state playoff game against La Marque High School in the fourth round.

After earning first-team all district honors as a linebacker and running back, Roberson was a Texas Sports Writers Association all-state selection after running for 888 yards and 18 touchdowns during his senior year. He was also named a finalist to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

He rushed for 1,318 yards and 26 touchdowns on 268 carries during his three years of varsity play.

He also played basketball and ran track while in the Brenham Cubs athletic program. He was a member of the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays. He was a prep honor roll student who garnered academic all-district honors and was an active participant in the 4-H club.

He received a football scholarship to the University of Texas where he saw action in every game during his four years with the Longhorns. He received a bachelor of science degree in applied learning and development/youth and community studies in 2012.

After graduating from UT, he returned home and joined the coaching staff at Brenham High School.

Roberson was born in Brenham and currently resides in Washington. He enjoys fishing, playing video games and spending time with his family.

Tim Oehrlein

Tim Oehrlein

Oehrlein is best known by Brenham fans as former longtime head coach Glen West’s offensive guru, serving as the Cubs’ offensive coordinator under West for 18 seasons (1998-2016).

Brenham posted a record of 179-57 under West and Oehrlein.

He served as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M for their 1985 and 1986 Cotton Bowl teams.

After stints at Lewisville High School and Memorial, Oehrlein joined West’s staff at Kemp High School.

In 1998 the two moved to Brenham, and were joined by another Brownwood teammate, Craig Agnew. The trio helped lead the Cubs to the UIL State finals three times — the last in 2013. It remains the Cubs’ only three appearance in the championship game.

He was selected as the Greater Houston Area Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013.

His record as a coach includes 29 playoff appearances, six regional finals, three state semifinals, three state finals and one state championship.

Oehrlein and his wife, Leah currently reside in San Saba. The couple has two sons, Jacob and John.
