Wait, no AirPods? Three things we didn't see at Apple's iPhone event

We finally know what Apple has planned for the iPhone.

On Tuesday, Apple rolled out the iPhone 13, with pre-orders for the latest smartphone kicking off Friday.

There's a standard model, the iPhone 13 Mini, the Pro and the Pro Max. They start at $699 and hit stores Sept. 24.

Meanwhile, we also got a closer look at the Apple Watch Series 7, an updated version of the tech giant's smartwatch complete with a larger display. And we got two new iPads: a revamped version of its entry-level iPad and the return of the iPad Mini.

Just as fun as it is to sift through all the announcements Apple made during its virtual event Tuesday, it's just as interesting to dive into the news Apple didn't make.

No Touch ID

For a second there, I thought Apple was going to bring back the option to log in to your iPhone or apps by fingerprint. The iPad Mini has a Touch ID option on the top button of the tablet, so I was curious whether Apple might consider the same for iPhone 13. Sorry, iPhone 13 owners, you're still going to have to log in with your face (passcodes work, too).

No new health tech for Apple Watch

Considering the advances made by Samsung on its Galaxy Watch series by adding sensors that can measure body fat or basal metabolic rate, I figured Apple might have similar updates in store. Instead, the focus was crafting an updated Apple Watch that's more durable and versatile (like adding a keyboard). Apple did, however, fall detection tech when riding a bike.

No new AirPods

There was some buzz about Apple possibly unveiling a new model of AirPods, which would've been the first new model revealed in two years. However, that buzz has shifted to October, when it is possible we get a cameo from Apple's wireless earbuds after all.

What else happened in tech?

• Facebook still struggling with misinformation. A Wall Street Journal report found anti-vaccine activists overran the social media platform with lies related to the COVID-19 vaccine, even as it said it was not responsible for creating doubt.

• Update your iPhone or iPad now. Seriously, don't wait. There's a major security flaw that could let hackers install spyware without your knowledge. 

• No password, no problem. Microsoft is allowing account holders to ditch their passwords for other methods of logging in to email or other accounts.

• Now hiring. Amazon is planning to hire 125,000 more employees across the U.S.

Game break

First, the bad news: If you are a fan of the upcoming military shooter "Battlefield 2042," developers Dice and publisher Electronic Arts confirm the game will be delayed. The good news is you only have to wait until Nov. 19. On Twitter, Dice cited the "ongoing conditions" caused by the pandemic making it tougher for developers to work together in person.
