Frankenmuth and Freeland both picked up big wins Friday, setting up a Tri-Valley Conference East showdown of undefeated teams in Week 5 at Frankenmuth.
Freeland handed Essexville Garber its first loss of the season, 43-14, while Frankenmuth crushed Bay City John Glenn, 54-0.
For Frankenmuth, Cole Lindow ran for 111 yards, including TD runs of 2 and 4 yards as the Eagles took a 34-0 halftime lead. Aiden Hoard added a 1-yard TD run, and Floyd Atwood returned an interception 45 yards for a TD. Sam Barger capped the first-half scoring with a 43-yard punt return and opened the second-half scoring with a 5-yard TD pass from Hoard. Jonah Sholten and Carson Knoll tacked on fourth-quarter TD runs for the Eagles, who ran for 282 yards and held John Glenn to minus-7 yards rushing.
Nick Ragan, Brenden Marker and Dayne Reif led the Eagles defense with six tackles each, with Marker adding a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Cole Jankowski added 63 yards on six carries for Frankenmuth. Wyatt Weyrowske led the John Glenn offense, completing10 of 22 passes for 99 yards, including seven to Carson Dabrowski.
For Freeland, the Falcons led 30-14 at halftime and added 13 points in the fourth quarter for the TVC East win. Bryson Huckeby completed 13 of 16 passes for 254 yards, including a 27-yard TD pass to Alex Duley, who also scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone. Huckeby added 50 yards and a 1-yard TD run on the ground. Garrett Pistro ran 19 times for 89 yards, including TD runs of 4 and 5 yards. Grant Bakos caught five passes for 88 yards, adding a pair of 2-point receptions. Nathan Levinson scored Freeland’s first TD on a 9-yard run.
Carrollton 44, Bullock Creek 21
DJ Voltz continued to excel at quarterback for 3-1 Carrollton, carrying 12 times for 129 yards and three touchdowns, adding 48 yards and a TD passing. Voltz also intercepted a pass on defense.
But Friday’s featured Carrollton star was Laterrance Cole, who had 15 carries for 185 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Cole had five tackles, including a sack. Dre Gissendanner gained 45 yards rushing, with a TD, and added four catches for 48 yards and another TD. Gissendanner also had two interceptions on defense, and ran for a 2-point conversion. Christian Garcia led the defense with seven tackles, including a forced fumble. The win sets up a TVC West showdown in Week 5 with Millington, which remained undefeated with a win over Standish-Sterling.
Millington 21, Standish-Sterling 8
Leyton Mays ran for 71 yards, including a 16-yard TD run, as Millington edged a Standish-Sterling team that was 3-0 heading into Friday’s game. Owen Butterfield followed with a pair of rushing touchdowns of 1 and 10 yards as Millington took a 21-0 lead in the third quarter. Standish-Sterling scored a third-quarter TD on a 4-yard run by Lane Thibault. Luke Matusik led the Millington defense with 10 tackles, while Calvin Dipzinski had eight tackles and an interception.
Swan Valley 56, Bridgeport 20
Swan Valley ran for eight touchdowns, taking a 35-12 halftime lead on its way to its first win of the season. Matthew Stark led the Swan Valley ground game with 15 carries for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Branden Brandt also had three TD carries, finishing with 104 yards on nine carries. Cody Ueberroth and Brice Tweedle also had rushing TDs for the Vikings. Trevor Grandy led the Swan Valley defense with eight tackles, including two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Ueberroth followed with six tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Hemlock 48, St. Louis 12
Robert Knapik ran for more than 200 yards, scoring four touchdowns to even Hemlock’s record at 2-2. Chad Brown added a pair of TD passes, a 28-yarder to Bryce Murphy and an 82-yarder to Jacob Shelagowski. Trent Brady also had a 6-yard TD run, with Adam Beyersdorf kicking six extra points. Joshua Collins led the defense with 11 tackles, including two sacks.
Michigan Lutheran Seminary 58, Valley Lutheran 3
Evan Wakefield ran 10 times for 241 yards, including TD runs of 24, 59 and 40 yards as Seminary took a 28-3 halftime lead and put the game away with a 24-point third quarter. Andy Liu, who ran for 56 yards, added TD runs of 15 and 2 yards, with Carson Koehler scoring on a 39-yard TD run. Ryan Dabe, who ran eight times for 156 yards, scored on a 20-yard TD run. Daniel Hilgendorf paced the MLS defense with 11 tackles, while Kurtis Borlaug added eight tackles. Sincyere Poe led Valley Lutheran with 57 yards rushing, adding two catches for 18 yards. Shane Darling kicked a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter, the first points of the season for Valley Lutheran.
Ithaca 43, Saginaw Nouvel 8
Preston Otter threw for 161 yards, including a 6-yard TD pass to Matthew Garcia, but Nouvel fell to 1-3 with the loss. Garcia also led the defense with 10 tackles, while Hayden Simerson had eight tackles. Liam Simerson added an interception for the Panthers.
Flint Powers 35, Saginaw United 6
Jamel Lipsey ran nine times for 100 yards, and Kieryus Boone added 81 yards on nine carries, but Saginaw United couldn’t stop Flint Powers in the SVL South game. United scored its lone touchdown on a 37-yard TD pass from Davarion Williams to Dylan Moore, who also had six tackles on defense. Lionel Baldwin and Isaiah Paige led the United defense with eight tackles each.
Midland High 35, Bay City Central 9
Drew Barrie completed 8 of 11 passes for 148 yards, including an 11-yard TD pass to Kyle Leigeb and a 35-yarder to Jason Davenport in the SVL win. Barrie also ran for two touchdowns, covering 1 and 2 yards. Mason Weaver, who finished with 73 yards rushing, ran for a 45-yard TD. Merrick Hocking paced the Midland defense with 8.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss. Davenport finished with five catches for 100 yards for the 2-2 Chemics.
Merrill 30, Webberville 8
Kaleb Walker threw for 175 yards, including three TDs covering 35, 26 and 30 yards for Merrill. Walker added 20 runs for 186 yards, including a 57-yard TD run. Joel Tack ran for 91 yards, including a 67-yard TD run. Jaden Davis caught two touchdowns, with Blake Smith adding another TD catch. Cameron Raftery led the defense with eight tackles, including a sack. Sophomore Grand Vedrode followed with seven tackles.
Montrose 35, Chesaning 0
Tyler Sager threw for 97 yards and ran for 38 yards in Chesaning’s first loss of the season. Reese Greenfelder caught seven passes for 68 yards, while Brayden Florian ran 24 times for 95 yards. Conner Everett led the Indians with 11 tackles, while Greenfelder had six tackles.
Reese 36, Unionville-Sebewaing 16
Reese broke USA’s string of seven consecutive Sugar Bowl wins Friday, improving to 4-0. Tanner TerBush completed 12 of 15 passes for 244 yards, including three touchdown passes to DaMarquss Palmreuter of 5, 65 and 5 yards. Palmreuter finished with seven catches for 124 yards. TerBush ran six times for 49 yards, with Levi Foco adding a 9-yard TD run and Ayden Rayner carrying the ball for a 16-yard TD. USA’s Braylon Ballard led all runners with 159 yards on 20 carries.
Laker High 35, Caro 9
Riley Parker ran 22 times for 138 yards and a touchdown in the Caro loss. Martin Samuelson led the defense with seven tackles, including a forced fumble and a sack.
Breckenridge 42, Coleman 6
Luke Saunders ran 11 times for 175 yards, including TD runs of 10, 73, 2 and 23 to lead Breckenridge to the win. Derek Mayle added a 20-yard TD run, with Jace Horman returning an interception 65 yards for another score. Horman and Saunders had two interceptions each, with Collin Sitts adding a fumble recovery and interception. Cramer Laurenz led the defense with seven tackles.
Coleman scored in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Conner Schrank, who finished with 58 yards rushing on offense and 10 tackles on defense. Ty Klopf threw for 146 yards, and Ayden Ruhle caught four passes for 65 yards, adding eight tackles on defense.
Beaverton 31, Sanford Meridian 22
Meridian cut the margin to 24-22 on a 2-yard Brayden Riley TD run with 1:26 remaining, but Mitchell Hall ran for his third Beaverton TD of the game, a 52-yarder with 24 seconds to secure a Jack Pine Conference win for the Beavers. Riley ran nine times for 119 yards, including two TD runs and two 2-point conversions. Hall finished with 19 carries for 184 yards and three TDs, adding three catches for 31 yards.
Clare 56, Shepherd 6
Jude Moeggenborg completed 11 of 23 passes for 143 yards, including a 10-yard TD pass to Tate Ross to account for Shepherd’s lone score. Jaden Carll caught four passes for 85 yards, while Maddox Woods and Isaiah Reihl had seven tackles each for the Bluejays. Woods also had a fumble recovery.
Mount Pleasant 33, Midland Dow 10
Mount Pleasant took a 20-0 halftime lead on its way to the SVL North win and a 4-0 record. Kory Davis ran 11 times for 122 yards, including TD runs of 1 and 64 yards. Davis also had an interception on defense. Ryan McIntyre, who ran for a 6-yard TD, was 8-for-8 for 84 yards passing. Max Humphry added a 4-yard TD run and a fumble recovery for a Oilers’ TD. Dow scored 10 points in the second half with Jack Bakus hittting Caden Chritz for a 31-yard TD pass. Bakus was 14 of 26 for 162 yards, including three to Chritz for 100 yards. Landen Miller kicked a 41-yard field goal for the Chargers. Dawson Studebaker led the Dow defense with 9.5 tackles.
Bay City Western 40, Heritage 19
Heritage struggled stopping Western’s Logan O’Hare, who ran for 203 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries. O’Hare’s TD runs covered 1, 5, 4 and 25 yards. He also ran for two 2-pointer conversions and threw for another to Eric Randall, who also caught a 53-yard D pass from O’Hare. No information was available for Heritage.
