OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The Purdue men's golf team started fast and overcome some hiccups in the middle of the round to sit in a fifth-place tie after the opening round of the Olympia Fields Invitational on Friday.

The Boilermakers totaled an 8-over par 288 on a hot, windless day at Olympia Fields Country Club, to finish the opening round seven shots behind leader and No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State (+1). No. 6-ranked North Carolina and Indiana are tied for second at 3-over par, while No. 5-ranked Arizona State is fourth at 5-over par. Purdue is tied for fifth with No. 4-ranked Texas and 20th-ranked Florida at 8-over par 288.

Purdue leads such national powers including defending National Champion Pepperdine (+13), Stanford (+11), Florida State (+11), Alabama (+9), Illinois (+12), Arizona (+15), Baylor (+18) and California (+22). The field consists of 10 of the top 26 teams in the latest GCAA national poll.

Purdue, North Carolina and Oklahoma State are the only teams with two players in the top 10 after round one.

The Boilermakers led through the first six holes of the event, but ran into trouble on holes 7 through 9. Purdue's five played the holes in 8-over par to fall off the pace a bit. Purdue played the other 15 holes in a combined 6-over par.

Leading the Boilermakers in round one was senior Joe Weiler with a 1-under par 69, good for a tie for third. Weiler was one of seven players to post an under-par round. He started with birdies on holes 1, 4 and 5, but dropped to 1-over par after a bogey on 7, a double bogey on 8 and a bogey on 9. He answered with birdies on 13 and 15 to move to 1-under par for his round.

Sophomore Herman Sekne is tied for eighth after an opening-round 70. Sekne birdied just two holes, 11 and 17, to offset bogeys on Nos. 1 and 18. He finished with 14 pars to rank second in the field after 18 holes. Sekne also ranked second in the field in par-4 scoring (-1).

Luke Prall is tied for 43rd after a 74 in his opening round. He was 1-over par through 15, before a bogey-double bogey-par finish dropped him back to the pack.

Nick Dentino is tied for 51st at 5-over par, while Cole Bradley is tied for 61st at 6-over par.

Purdue will tee off at 9:45 to 10:21 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1 in round two and will be paired with Arizona State and Texas.
