Warmer Air As We Approach Easter

Temperatures will gradually climb across the Tennessee Valley as we aproach the Easter Holiday.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Another beautiful afternoon across North Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee. Temperatures were again below where we would expect them to be this time of year. We only climb into the mid-60s this afternoon. We should be climbing into the upper 60s and low 70s.

We'll be cool Thursday night and Friday morning. Temperatures will drop into the low 40s. Some of the cool spots could drop into the upper 30s. We'll be much warmer for your Good Friday. Temperatures will have no issue climbing into the upper 60s and low 70s. It's going to be a wonderful day and a wonderful evening for any services that take place on Good Friday. This is going to transition nicely into a truly beautiful Easter Weekend.

Easter Weekend looks fantastic. We'll quickly climb into the mid and upper 70s by Saturday and Easter Sunday. A couple of models have been trying to bring the smallest chance of rain to the Tennessee Valley on Easter Sunday. I'll include it in the forecast, but maintain the message that most will likely be dry.

Statistically, it does not usually rain on Easter Sunday. The last time we saw rain on Easter was in 2020 Where we saw over 3.0" of it. There is rain in the forecast. Our next chance of rain will come to the Tennessee Valley once we  get to Monday and specifically Tuesday of next week.

Our next legitimate opportunity for showers and thunderstorms will move into North Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee on Tuesday. By Monday evening we're looking at showers and storms back to our west. These storms could be on the stronger end of the spectrum when they arrive to the Tennessee Valley.

As for drought conditions across the Tennessee Valley: we have seen tremendous improvement the past few weeks. So much so that most of us our out of any sort of drought conditions, with the exception of extreme north-west Lauderdale county who is for the most part just experiencing extremely dry conditions and Giles county in southern-middle Tennessee, who is experiencing slight drought conditions in some areas.

Spring Severe Weather

Let's not forget that the spring season not only means allergies get worse, but is also means that our primary severe weather season is upon us. Our spring severe weather season here in the Tennessee Valley usually begins early March and lasts through early May. Most of the tornadoes we've accounted for since 1950 have occurred March, April, and May with April being the most (April 27, 2011 accounting for most of the tornadoes within that month timeframe).

Although most of us know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning, it's important for a reminder as we do head into the spring severe weather season. A tornado watch just means that conditions are favorable for tornado development and usually cover a good amount of areas. A tornado watch means that rotation has been detected and potentially a funnel cloud has been spotted/tornado has been reported and covers only a certain amount of cities within a warning polygon.

The best tornado shelters when danger is imminent is a basement or a tornado shelter. If you don't have access to those two, your next best safe area would be an interior room of a well constructed home or building with any exterior doors/windows closed/covered. You also want to have some sort of protection over your head like a bicycle helmet of some sorts and/or a bed mattress. The most unsafe areas you can be during a tornado warning is a mobile/manufactured home, large, exterior rooms of a home, in a vehicle underneath an overpass.
