COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) -- With almost 55% of South Carolinians now fully vaccinated, health officials say there are still many who are hesitant to get the vaccine. DHEC officials told WACH FOX News that there is a lot of misinformation being shared about he COVID-19 vaccine.
DHEC Dr. Jonathan Knoche says many of the of fears people have about the vaccine are just myths. He says the vaccine is completely safe.
“I understand that there’s a lot of information that people are getting on social media and their friends and different sources and although I want people to express their thoughts or views, I think when it comes to making medical decisions and making well informed decisions, I think we should look to people who have education and a background in medical sciences and medical literature," said Dr. Knoche.
The vaccine does not affect fertility for women, a concern that Dr. Knoche says he hears often. He says he's also heard concerns about the vaccine containing a microchip, which he says is untrue.
Dr. Knoche says its important that people check their sources when researching information about the vaccine and that it's best to rely on sources like DHEC and the CDC.
"I really encourage people to look at sources like the CDC and DHEC. They can look to their own healthcare provider, reach out to them, things that are evidence based and people who have training in the medical community are good sources of information," said Dr. Knoche.
Health experts say you may feel mild side effects after getting your vaccine but those should subside in 24 to 48 hours.
