ORONO, Maine –  Julie Wester scored her first collegiate goal late in the first quarter Friday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex, but Maine topped Merrimack by a 5-1 final.

Wester's goal came off an Anne-Sophie Hogenboom insert on a penalty corner that made it a 2-1 score at the time. The Black Bears responded with three unanswered goals to cap the scoring.

Rapid Recap
  • Maine scored twice in the game's opening 13 and a half minutes, but Wester quickly responded after the second tally.
  • Hogenboom inserted from the near side to Wester at the top of the arc, who turned and ripped a shot that beat the Black Bear goalkeeper high for the Dutch midfielder's first career goal. It also marked her countrywoman's Hogenboom's first collegiate point.
  • The score remained 2-1 into the halftime break thanks in large part to Brooke Bolduc's four saves.
  • Bolduc's solid play resumed in the second half as the Maine native turned aside nine shots, but the Black Bears broke through for a trio to put the game away.
