Unsigned veteran players can earn a contract with an NHL team by impressing enough in training camp on a professional tryout contract (PTO). Training camps open Wednesday, and the regular season begins Oct. 12.

The following notable players (listed alphabetically) will be in an NHL camp on a PTO with the listed team:
Artem Anisimov, Colorado Avalanche
The 33-year-old forward scored nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 19 games with the Ottawa Senators last season. He has scored 376 points (180 goals, 196 assists) in 771 regular-season games with the Senators, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers and 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 43 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Anisimov was released from his tryout contract on Oct. 8.
Matt Bartkowski, Pittsburgh Penguins
The 33-year-old defenseman did not have a point in one game with the Minnesota Wild last season. He has scored 48 points (eight goals, 40 assists) in 256 regular-season games with the Wild, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins, and three points (one goal, two assists) in 20 playoff games.
Bartkowski was released from his tryout contract on Oct. 2.
Brian Boyle, Pittsburgh Penguins
The 36-year-old forward last played in the NHL with the Florida Panthers in 2019-20, scoring 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 39 games. He has scored 213 points (130 goals, 101 assists) in 805 regular-season games with the Panthers, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning, Rangers and Los Angeles Kings, and 31 points (16 goals, 15 assists) in 118 NHL playoff games.
Alex Chiasson, Vancouver Canucks
The forward, who turns 31 on Oct. 1, scored 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 45 games with the Edmonton Oilers last season and one goal in three playoff games. He has scored 202 points (101 goals, 101 assists) in 564 regular-season games with the Oilers, Washington Capitals, Flames, Senators and Dallas Stars, and seven points (four goals, three assists) in 37 NHL playoff games. Chiasson won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.
Tyler Ennis, Ottawa Senators
The 31-year-old forward scored nine points (three goals, six assists) in 30 games for the Oilers last season. He has scored 322 points (136 goals, 186 assists) in 643 regular-season games with the Buffalo Sabres, Wild, Maple Leafs, Senators and Oilers, and 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 24 NHL playoff games.
Ennis signed a one-year contract with the Senators on Oct. 7.
Michael Frolik, St. Louis Blues
The 33-year-old forward did not score a point in eight games with the Montreal Canadiens last season. He scored 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 57 games with the Flames and Sabres in 2019-20 and has scored 384 points (159 goals, 225 assists) in 858 regular-season games with the Montreal Canadiens, Sabres, Flames, Winnipeg Jets, Blackhawks and Panthers. Frolik has scored 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) in 47 NHL playoff games and won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2013.
Frolik was released from his tryout contract on Oct. 7.
Alex Galchenyuk, Arizona Coyotes
The 27-year-old forward scored 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 34 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs and Senators last season and scored four points (one goal, three assists) in six playoff games. He has scored 333 points (140 goals, 193 assists) in 583 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs, Senators, Wild, Penguins, Coyotes and Canadiens and 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in 38 playoff games.
Galchenyuk signed a one-year contract with the Coyotes on Oct. 6.
Frederik Gauthier, New Jersey Devils
The 26-year-old forward did not score a point in two games with the Coyotes last season and scored seven points (two goals, five assists) in 18 games with Tucson of the American Hockey League. He has scored 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) in 170 regular-season games with the Coyotes and Maple Leafs, and has no points in eight NHL playoff games.
Gauthier signed a one-year, two-way contractwith the Devils on Oct. 8.
Erik Gustafsson, New York Islanders
The 29-year-old defenseman scored 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) in 29 regular-season games with the Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers last season, and three points (one goal, two assists) in 16 playoff games. He has scored 131 points (29 goals, 102 assists) in 250 regular-season games with the Canadiens, Flyers, Flames and Blackhawks, and eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 31 NHL playoff games.
Mark Jankowski, New Jersey Devils
The 27-year-old forward scored 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 45 games with the Penguins last season. He has scored 75 points (40 goals, 35 assists) in 253 regular-season games with the Penguins and Flames, and has no points in 10 NHL playoff games.
James Neal, St. Louis Blues
The 34-year-old forward scored 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 29 games with the Oilers last season and did not have a point in two playoff games. Neal has scored 555 points (294 goals, 261 assists) in 850 regular-season games with the Oilers, Flames, Vegas Golden Knights, Predators, Penguins and Stars, including at least 20 goals 10 times in his 13 NHL seasons. He has scored 58 points (33 goals, 25 assists) in 110 NHL playoff games. He scored a hat trick in the preseason opener, a 6-2 win against the Wild on Sept. 25, and led the Blues in goals during the preseason (four).
Neal agreed to a one-year contract with the Blues on Oct. 9.
Bobby Ryan, Detroit Red Wings
The 34-year-old forward scored 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 33 game with the Red Wings last season. He has scored 569 points (261 goals, 308 assists) in 866 games with the Red Wings, Senators and Anaheim Ducks, and 32 points (18 goals, 14 assists) in 51 NHL playoff games.
Colton Sceviour, Edmonton Oilers
The 32-year-old forward scored 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 46 games with the Penguins last season. He has scored 151 points (64 goals, 87 assists) in 500 regular-season games with the Penguins, Panthers and Stars, and eight points (three goals, five assists) in 19 NHL playoff games.
Evgeny Svechnikov, Winnipeg Jets
The 24-year-old forward scored eight points (three goals, five assists) in 21 games with the Red Wings last season. Svechnikov has scored 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 41 NHL games with Detroit, which selected him in the first round (No. 19) of the 2015 NHL Draft.
Jimmy Vesey, New Jersey Devils
The 28-year-old forward scored 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 50 games with the Maple Leafs and Canucks last season. He has scored 120 points (64 goals, 56 assists) in 354 regular-season games with the Canucks, Maple Leafs, Sabres and Rangers, and five points (one goal, four assists) in 12 NHL playoff games.
Tyler Wotherspoon, New Jersey Devils
The 28-year-old defenseman last played in the NHL with the Flames in 2016-17, scoring no points in four games. He had six assists in 24 games with Lehigh Valley of the AHL last season. Wotherspoon has five assists in 30 games with the Flames and no points in six NHL playoff games.
