International travel restrictions could put a damper on world-famous hot air balloon festival
ANNUAL BALLOON FIESTA, BUT TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS MIKEY SOME OF OUR FAVOREIT BALLOONS FROM TAKING PART THIS YEAR. HERE’S ANGEL SALCEDO. DUNGRI BALLOON FIESTA MORE THAN 500 BALLOONS TAKE OFF EVERY DAY. NOW SEOM OF THESE HAVE INTERNATIONAL PILOTS, BUT THEY MAY HAVE TO WTAI UNTIL NEXT YEAR BECAUSE OF INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL REGULATIONS. ISTH IS MY 17TH. THIS WOULD BE 17 THIS YEAR. DAVID LEAD IS A VETERAN PILOT. HE WAS READY TO TEAK OFF THIS YEAR, BUT NOW HE’LL HAVE TO SPEND BALLOON FIESTA ON THE GROUND. THE AMERICAN BORDER IS CLOSEDO T NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL IN OTHER WORDS JEFF’S HAVING A CENTRAL REASON ACROSS THE BORDER CURRENT TRAVEL REGULATIONS ALLOW BORD. TRAVEL BY FLIGHT WELL ANY TRAVEL BY CAR FERRYR O TRAIN IS PROHIBITED UNLESS IT’S CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL TRAVEL. UNFORTUNATELY, DAVID CAN’T PUT HIS BLOALON ON A FLIGHT. WELL, I PROBABLY GET IT. I’D PROBABLY GET IN SOME TROUBLE TRYING IT ORVE MY SHOULDER THERE THE BLACK AND ORANGE ONE IS MY BELOWES DPITE THE CHANGES TOM GARRITY BELIEVES THIS YEAR IS GOING TO BE JUST AS FUN WITH 544 PLUS HOT AIR BALLOONS FROM AROUND THE UNITED STATES. WE HAVE SIX DIFFERENT COUNTRIES THAT ARE REPRESENTED. YOU KNOW, IT'’ GONNA BE BE QUITE THE QUITE THE EXPERIENCE. AND DAVID STILL HOPES TO MAKE IT WNDO FOR THE FIESTA. MY OLDEST DAUGHTER WHO’S NEVER BEEN TO FIESTA WAS IS COMING DOWN A CWRE WITH ME THIS YEAR. THE’E'S GETTING LESS AND LESS TIMES TO COME DNOW PROBABLY FOR ME. SO AS TIME PROGRESSES SHE BETTER COME NOW NOW EVEN THOUGH WE’LL BE MISSING A FEW PILOTS THIS YEAR MOST OF THE SPECIAL SHAPE BALLOONS ARE SCHEDULED TO TAKE OFF AS WELL AS 10 NEW ONES FROM BLOOM FIESTA. During Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico, more than 500 balloons take off per day. Some of those have international pilots, but with COVID-19 travel regulations, they may have to wait until next year.David Gleed is a veteran pilot, this would be his 17th Balloon Fiesta. He was ready to take off this year. Now he may have to spend Balloon Fiesta on the ground.Gleed said, "The American border is closed to non-essential travel. In other words, you must have significant reason to cross the border."Current travel regulations allow border travel by flight while any travel by car, ferry or train is prohibited unless it's considered essential. Unfortunately, Gleed can't put his balloon on a flight."Well, I'd probably get into some trouble trying it," Gleed said.Despite the changes, Tom Garrity believes this year will be just as fun."With 544 hot air balloons from around the United States. we have six different countries represented. It’s going to be quite the experience," Garrity said.David still hopes to make it down for the fiesta."My oldest daughter, who has never been to Fiesta, was coming down to crew with me this year. There are less and less times to come down probably, for me, so as time progresses, she better come now," Gleed said.Although the celebration will be missing a few pilots this year, most of the special shaped balloons are scheduled to take off come Oct. 2.
