Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro has filed to be a candidate in the race for New York’s 19th Congressional District, according to information posted to the Federal Elections Commission's website.

Molinaro has made no public statement that he intended to seek the seat, currently held by Democratic Rep. Antonio Delgado, though he has made hints of seeking higher office throughout the year. However, a source told Spectrum News 1 Friday that he will formally announce his candidacy next week.

The 2018 Republican nominee for New York governor decided not to try again for the executive mansion, endorsing Long Island Rep. Lee Zeldin for that position back in May.

He was recently re-elected as county executive in 2019.

The 19th Congressional District has attracted former gubernatorial hopefuls of the recent past. The 2016 race there pitted Republican John Faso, who ran for governor in 2006, against Zephyr Teachout, who attempted a Democratic primary challenge against Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2014.

Faso ultimately won that contest, but was unseated by Delgado in 2018.

The district may be slightly altered when the 2022 race comes due to the state’s redistricting process currently underway.

The Delgado for Congress Campaign responded to the news on Friday, saying Delgado has fought for the region and held dozens of town hall meetings.

"He has had 12 bills signed into law under Democratic and Republican administrations and secured over $400 million in direct support for our counties, towns, and villages," the Delgado campaign said. "He looks forward to continuing that work every single day."
