LAS VEGAS (KSNV) —
Nellis Air Force Base hosted a ceremony recognizing service members who have been prisoners of war or listed as missing in action.

The event was part of National POW/MIA Day, which is observed on the third Friday of every September.
The ceremony at Nellis specifically honored four former POWs: Eugene Ramos, Vince Shank, Marvin Carter and Dean Whitaker.
"Today is a day where the nation pauses to remember our brothers and sisters in arms who answered the call of duty and never returned home," Col. Todd Dyer, 99th Air Base Wing commander, said in a statement. "But while we are honoring them today, we always remember."

The U.S. military estimates there are 83,114 service members still missing from conflicts throughout the nation's history.
