A 41-year-old D.C. police officer has died of COVID-19 complications, the Metropolitan Police Department reports.
Daniel Merritt, a 13-year veteran of the force, died Friday morning.
“Officer Merritt’s contributions to this department and the community will not go unrecognized," MPD Chief Robert J. Contee, III said. "He will be remember[ed] by all, who had an opportunity to know and work with him as a dedicated law enforcement professional who devoted his life to the profession. Our sincere condolences are extended to the family, friends and colleagues who are grieving his loss.”
This is only the second reported MPD officer death of the pandemic. Senior Police Officer Keith Williams, a school resource officer who had worked under the School Safety Division, passed away at the age of 53 in June 2020. He had served with MPD for 31 years.
According to the MPD statement, Merritt was an avid sports fan and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his father, sister, cousin, brother-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
