A new nationwide CDC study says Moderna is the most effective vaccine against COVID-19. Though Pfizer is only slightly behind Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson also protects very well against coronavirus.

While Moderna is 93% effective, Pfizer stands at 88% and Johnson & Johnson comes at third place with 71%. To determine these numbers, the CDC conducted a nationwide study including 3,600 adults who were hospitalized with COVID-19 over the course of nearly six months, according to CNN.

The study reads: “Among U.S. adults without immunocompromising conditions, vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 hospitalization during March 11–August 15, 2021, was higher for the Moderna vaccine (93%) than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (88%) and the Janssen vaccine (71%).”

“Although these real-world data suggest some variation in levels of protection by vaccine, all FDA-approved or authorized COVID-19 vaccines provide substantial protection against COVID-19 hospitalization,” the study continues.

The study found Pfizer had more of a decline in effectiveness compared to Moderna after full vaccination.

“VE against COVID-19 hospitalization was slightly lower for the 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine than the Moderna vaccine, with this difference driven by a decline in VE after 120 days for the Pfizer-BioNTech but not the Moderna vaccine,” the study reads. “The Moderna vaccine also produced higher postvaccination anti-RBD antibody levels than did the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.”

“Differences in VE between the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine might be due to higher mRNA content in the Moderna vaccine, differences in timing between doses (3 weeks for Pfizer-BioNTech versus 4 weeks for Moderna), or possible differences between groups that received each vaccine that were not accounted for in the analysis,” the study added.
