BOSTON — Chris Sale (COVID) will be cleared to start for the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

The Red Sox and Orioles will play here at Fenway Park at 7:10 p.m.

Sale, who tested positive, was placed on the COVID-related list last Friday. He missed his start against the White Sox in Chicago on Sunday.

Lefty Keegan Akin (2-9, 6.83 ERA) will start opposite Sale (3-0, 2.52 ERA).

Sale made his first start back from Tommy John surgery against the Orioles. He hurled 5 innings and allowed two runs, six hits (two homers) and no walks while striking out eight in a victory Aug. 14. Trey Mancini and Austin Hays both homered against him.

Boston has placed 14 players on the COVID IL since Aug. 27.

Christian Arroyo, Jonathan Araúz, Yairo Muñoz, Danny Santana, Matt Barnes, Jarren Duran and Phillips Valdez all remain on the list.

Barnes could be activated with Sale before Friday’s game, manager Alex Cora said.

“We’re still waiting on Barnesy,” Cora said. “We’re going to meet in a little bit to see what we’re going to do. There’s nothing wrong with him. It’s just a matter of he pitched Wednesday (in a rehab game for Portland) to see how he feels today. And we’ll go from there.”

Nick Pivetta will pitch Saturday and Nathan Eovaldi Sunday vs. the Orioles. Eduardo Rodriguez will start vs. the Mets on Tuesday.
