The spookiest holiday of the year is officially at your doorstep, and everywhere you look, Halloween decorations abound. From sassy talking ghouls to larger-than-life animatronic skeletons, these over-the-top looks bring delight to those who love all things creepy. However, if your style leans more sophisticated than scary, consider choosing moody florals over warm-toned mums—specifically, midnight calla lilies.

These deliciously-dark flowers add a chic element to your festive decor without feeling overwhelming. Consider them the elegant finishing touch to your collection of holiday paraphernalia or a thoughtful hostess ~treat~ if you're attending a party.

We spoke to a professional florist to learn all the tricks for displaying these beautiful blooms, whether you're looking for a sleek and simple arrangement or a huge harvest-inspired bouquet.

Why is fall the perfect time to decorate with midnight calla lilies?

“Midnight calla lilies are a magical variety of calla that have such a rich, deep purple coloration that they look black to the eye—Trompe l’oeil flowers if you will," says UrbanStems head florist Justin Lievano.

This gothic color and sculptural shape give them an otherworldly quality that fits in seamlessly with the spirit of the season.

“Midnight callas are so popular this time of year because it’s spooky season," Lievano says. "Plus, they’re very fun to style. Whether you’re having a Halloween party or just a cozy get together, they make a striking statement without much work.”

How to Show Off Your Midnight Calla Lilies

When it comes to styling, it doesn't take much to make these florals stand out since they're already unexpected.

"The easiest way to use midnight calla lilies is all by themselves in a neutral vase with a narrow opening," Lievano says. "An off-white or cream colored vase creates a really dramatic contrast with the blooms, and choosing a vase with a narrow opening will help support the blooms so they sit just right."

To further enhance the look, create your dream whimsigoth tablescape with minimalist styling elements like simple candle sticks and bowls of rich-colored fruits (pomegranates, plums, red grapes).

If you're a maximalist and want to "gild the lily" (pun intended), make a high-impact floral arrangement by mixing the lilies with other blooms. Aim for a bold contrast by incorporating some greenery with acacia foliage, which has a silver-green color with purple tips.

"Midnight calla lilies go fabulously with other exotic and dramatic stems in an All Hallows Eve bouquet," Lievano says. "I recommend choosing very textural stems which will catch the next to the smooth, sleek callas. You could use red amaranthus, deep red leucadendron, or smokebush (aka continus) to really give your bouquet that Wednesday Addams feeling."

However you decide to use midnight calla lilies, you can guarantee they'll be the one piece of Halloween decor you won't be eager to get rid of come November 1.
