The New York Giants offensive lineman Nick Gates suffered a scary lower leg injury on the first play of their second drive. The team quickly announced that Gates suffered a lower leg fracture.

Gates was apparently tangled up with Washington Football Team DL Jonathan Allen and went down in pass protection.

Both teams quickly left the field as Giants called for trainers and the cart was brought out. The injury was bad enough that the Thursday Night Football crew elected to not show a replay of the play.

The team announced that Gates was soon transported to a local hospital and would have surgery to repair the broken tibia and fibula in the morning.

UPDATE

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Gates had surgery Friday morning and confirmed that he would miss the remainder of the 2021 season.

Gates got the start at left guard after Shane Lemieux was moved to the injured reserve. That moved Gates over from the center position at which he has started the last 17 games, while Billy Price got the start at center. New addition Ben Bredeson came onto the field in relief of Gates at left guard.

We’ll have more on the injury as we get it.
