WOODSTOCK, N.Y. — The speed limit has been reduced from 40 to 35 mph on the stretch of Glasco Turnpike between Upper Byrdcliff and Rock City roads in Woodstock.

The Woodstock Town Board passed a resolution in June requesting the reduction, and the state Department of Transportation approved the change this week.

The affected stretch of Glasco Turnpike (Ulster County Route 33) is about 1.4 miles long.

The town requested the reduction based on safety concerns voiced by residents, pedestrians and motorists. The state approved the request after an investigation concluded the move would improve safety for both walkers and drivers.

“Ensuring the public safety of Woodstock residents will always be a paramount priority, said Ulster County Legislature Majority Leader Jonathan Heppner, a Woodstock Democrat and supporter of the change. “Lowering the speed limit on this section of the Glasco Turnpike will improve safety for neighbors, motorists and those of us who enjoy a good walk.”
