  1. 'I can't believe nobody won it'

    FT Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Michael Brown

Former Leeds midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was brilliant. That's all we wanted to see. Leeds' attacking threat was immense. We saw fight, determination and flashes from the top of the pitch from Newcastle. Joelinton was on form at times, Almiron had some little runs, Saint-Maximin was the star of the show for them. He was a constant threat, creating different opportunities and getting himself a goal. Both sides were brilliant to watch, I can't believe nobody won it.

  2. Stat attack

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    • Since his first start for Leeds in the Premier League in November last season, only four players have scored or assisted more non-penalty goals in the competition than Raphinha (17 - 8 goals, 9 assists).
    • Crysencio Summerville (19y 322d) became the first teenager to make his Premier League debut for Leeds United since Scott Carson in January 2004 (18y 150d), and first outfield teenager to do so since Aaron Lennon in August 2003 (16y 129d).
    • In what is his 14th season as a Premier League manager, Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has seen his side fail to win any of their opening five matches of a campaign in the competition for the very first time.
  3. 'We need to get the fans back on board'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow on returning after struggling to recover from Covid-19 last season: "It's been a tough couple of months building myself back up to get back out in front of this fantastic crowd. I didn't play in front of them last year because of Covid, so it's been a long time coming."

On fan support: "These fans can be the best in the world, we need to get them back on board and our performances need to improve to get them on board."

  4. 'It was like when you play at school'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce tells Sky Sports: "If I'm being honest I enjoyed the game and let's be honest it could have gone either way. It was like when you play at school, it was end to end and to be fair to Leeds they force you into that way. After a difficult start, the response in difficult circumstances was terrific.

"When you're analysing, the players have given everything they could and that's all you can ask in my position. The actual game and response from our team was terrific.

"It's been fine margins today. We needed a bit of luck to go our way. It's been a difficult start there's no disputing that but if we keep playing the way we did there then I'm convinced we'll be ok.

On the reaction from Newcastle fans: "I can understand frustrations. I get that. The atmosphere they created makes the spectacle. They are unique and the way they got behind the team was the most important thing and I'm very pleased about that.

On being winless so far: "That's the big thing about the Premier League whether you're at the top or the bottom. You have to accept when you don't win a game you come under pressure. How you handle it, keep your dignity, do what you think is best and stick with it. The way they have gone about their work today, it could have gone either way but it was a great football match."

  5. Post update

    Here's Steve Bruce...

  6. 'All Newcastle players are disappointed'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Allan Saint-Maximin speaking to Sky Sports: "We are really disappointed tonight because the team gave everything to win this game. It was really hard to start the game 1-0 down against Leeds because they are a tough team.

"I think we showed a lot of quality and character to come back into the game. We had a lot of chances to make it 2-1 but it didn't happen and all the players are really disappointed.

"A game like this is much better than against a team that just stays in defence. It is really good for me, but I'm disappointed tonight because it was most important to help the team win and we drew.

"We knew we needed a win to start the season, so we just have to keep going and work hard."

  7. Post update

Marcelo Bielsa is a journalist's dream to transcribe, btw.

At the other end of the scale, Jurgen Klopp and Daniel Farke are a tough task to take down.

  8. 'The results are not great'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"It is a game we could have won. It wouldn't have been strange if we scored one or two goals more.

"The construction of the offensive game was good. We had to adapt to a great centre forward like the number 10 [Saint-Maximin]. I think in some way our defensive game was sufficient.

"The results are not great, from 15 points to have only three is too little."

  9. Winless run worries Bielsa

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa speaking to Sky Sports: "We had sufficient chances to go in at the break with a bigger margin but we didn't score in proportion to the amount of chances we created.

On whether Dan James should have had a penalty: "I'm guided by the decisions of the referee and I won't say any more than that, especially with the great referee that it was today.

On Luke Ayling's injury: "Let's hope it's nothing that prevents him from playing because it will be the fourth option at centre back that we'll lose."

On going five games without a win: "Yes, yes, of course it worries me."

On how he can turn it around: "We were missing some efficiency and capitalising on the chances that we had. We had a lot of possession, perhaps we could have created even more danger especially in the second half."

  10. Post update

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

We've had reaction from Dan James, Karl Darlow, Liam Cooper, Marcelo Bielsa and Allan Saint-Maximin (both coming up) but are yet to see Steve Bruce.

  11. Post update

    Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Alistair Magowan

BBC Sport at St James Park

Allan Saint-Maximin the saviour? His fine goal and performance certainly helped Newcastle and Steve Bruce for now, but it was a gloomy-looking manager who headed down the tunnel at the final whistle.

A chastening night for the Magpies boss.

  12. Get Involved

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only - standard message rates apply)

Charlie: Those ungrateful (short term memory) Leeds fans who forgot where they were for 15 odd years, may want to tone down their complaints. They’ve lost 2 games to Man United and Liverpool. They should be more concerned if they were playing badly and not creating chances.

  13. 'Nobody is going to turn it around we've got to go and do it'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds defender Liam Cooper tells Premier League productions: "We came here to play our stuff. It's never an easy place to come. We got the early goal which is what we wanted and needed and then conceded a sloppy goal in our half. We all know how big it is to put chances in and keep them out at the other end. I'm gutted to be honest.

"Newcastle defended well. They sat deep and filled the box and made if difficult for us to get in behind. We need to improve on that and I'm sure we will. Nobody is going to turn it around we've got to go and do it and go and get the results and we will look to do that."

On facing Allan Saint-Maximin: "We all know how good he is with the dribble. He's probably one of the fastest players in the league so you've got to be on song and switched on at all times. I thought we coped pretty well with him apart from the goal."

On still searching for their first win: "We're knocking on the door. Winning any game in this league is tough, we all know that. We need one fast and we deserved one tonight".

  14. Saint-Maximin 'a massive asset'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow: "First half was probably them. We did well to get the goal at the end of the first half. It's something we have worked on. We haven't been finishing halves well, first and second halves.

"In the second half it was a completely different game, I felt like we dominated the second half and maybe could even won it.

On goalscorer Allan Saint-Maximin: "He is a massive asset, he is capable of everything and anything. You just have to watch him, the fans adore him for bringing such a positive mentality. He is not afraid to try things and he is scoring goals."

  15. 'The manager trusts us as much as we trust ourselves'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds winger Dan James speaking to Sky Sports: "We got that first goal and it was a bit fortunate to go in. Nobody touched it on the way in. It was a great ball in from Raphinha and thankfully it's gone in the back of the net.

On whether he should have won a penalty: "I'll have a look. At the time I didn't think it was and I can't influence the referees decision and i'll stick with that."

On his first Leeds start: "I'm delighted to get my first start. I'm just glad to be here now and the fans were amazing. They follow us everywhere.

On if there is any panic with Leeds still being winless: "The manager trusts us as much as we trust ourselves. We go into this Tuesday game in the cup with a winning mentality."

  16. 'It was a very, very enjoyable 1-1 draw'

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

    Michael Brown

Former Leeds midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It has been a wonderful game; chances, ability, agility, work-rate from both sides. Leeds started well, Newcastle played their part. It was a very, very enjoyable 1-1 draw.

  17. FULL-TIME

    Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

All over. Loud boos ring out around St James' Park.

A point apiece in an excellent contest, but a result that does not really help either team.

  18. Post update

    Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Leeds almost win it late on but Junior Firpo's low cross into the six yards box is cleared before Crysencio Summerville curls wide.
