JUNCTON CITY, Ore. - Student access to restrooms at Junction City High School "will be limited due to extreme vandalism that occured in multiple restrooms yesterday afternoon," according to a message sent to parents Friday morning.
Brian Young with the school district said dispensers in 5 restrooms at the high school were damaged Thursday in what he described as "criminal vandalism."
"We're allowing kids of course to use the restrooms, but we're doing a sign-in procedure," Young said. "We are tracking who is going in."
The district also saw signs that students messed around with things in the restrooms at the middle school. That did not involve property damage, he said.
The message indicated students were informed of the issue during their first period class on Friday.
The announcement says "administration is aware that there is a current 'Tik Tok Challenge' called 'Devious Liks' that may be linked to this vandalism and similar instances of school vandalism across the country."
"We feel there is a link between that social media and what we're seeing here this week," Young said. "We don't want it in our schools. There's a lot of positives of social media, but this is definitely a negative that we've seen this week."
The district hopes students who saw something will say something.
"We are asking students with information about the vandalism at JCHS to come forward so that this can be addressed with those responsible."
"We're just asking our kids to take a stand for what we believe in. We're asking kids to really take a stand for the positive this week and help us out," he said. "We have a brand new high school, and we want to take pride in what the community has blessed us with."
The message to parents notes that "all students will have access to the restroom when they need it, however open, independent access will be limited."
