ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Eight members of the St. Louis County Police Department have been honored with a “Back the Blue” Award for their heroic acts of service while off duty at Lake of the Ozarks. Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt gave the awards on Thursday, Sept. 16.
In July, Sergeant Shanna Ostendorf along with Police Officers Michael Deck, Kyle Embrey, Dawn Neuman, Justin Bryant, Robert Tosie, John O'Neill, and Kristin Engle were off-duty, when a gunfight broke out at a restaurant on the Lake Ozark Strip. Those eight off-duty officers were nearby when the shooting began.
One person was killed and four were injured in the fight, and two have been charged in connection with it. Local law enforcement quickly arrived at the scene, and that evening the Strip was closed down, with Lake Ozark Mayor Dennis Newberry saying it was the largest law enforcement response he had ever seen at a Lake Ozark incident.
“We reacted. We were outgunned, outmanned. We didn’t have bulletproof vests on, and most of us had our backup weapons which usually carry a less amount of rounds,” Ostendorf told Fox2Now. She added, “This is probably the highest honor of my career so far.”
