GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- A 76-year-old Howell man drowned Thursday afternoon in an Argentine Township lake, police said.

Argentine Township police and fire departments responded just after 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, to Lobdell Lake in the 800 block of Haviland Beach Drive for a water rescue.

First responders found an unresponsive 76-year old man and a 72-year-old woman appearing to be in shock had been retrieved from the water and taken to shore by fellow boaters, according to an Argentine Township Police Department news release.

First responders performed lifesaving measures on the man, which were unsuccessful. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name has not been released.

The woman was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the man and woman, both from Howell, were boating when the man slipped off the boat ladder without a lifejacket on.

The woman threw the man a life jacket, then jumped in the water with another life jacket on to try to help him. She screamed for help and was heard by residents of the area who responded to assist, police said.

Argentine Township police were assisted at the scene by the Linden Police Department, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and Medstar Ambulance Service.

The incident remains under investigation by the Argentine Township Police Department.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call the Argentine Township Police Department at 810-735-5317.
