WASHINGTON (SBG) - Smokers in the U.S. may soon see an increase in the price of their products.
House Democrats are proposing a tax hike on tobacco and nicotine products as a way to help fund their $3.5 trillion spending bill.
Opponents worry it would violate President Joe Biden's promise to not raise taxes for Americans making less than $400,000 a year.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki says the tax doesn't violate Biden’s promise the same way the vehicle mileage tax does, which Biden opposes.
"Millions of Americans go to work and drive their cars and go to work and that would impact millions and millions of Americans. Obviously public health guidance advises against smoking, so that's not something that we think falls into the same category,” said Psaki.
The move could help raise nearly $100-billion over the next decade and potentially crack down on nicotine addiction.
