It looks like Denis Villeneuve isn't a big fan of Marvel films. The Dune director has shared his thoughts of the comic book movies and says that these films "are nothing more than a cut and paste of others."
Villeneuve recently spoke to Elmundo where he was asked for his take on how comic book movies are dominating the box office. Interestingly, the Blade Runner 2049 director pointed out that "there are too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a cut and paste of others."
This isn't the first time that Villeneuve has thrown shade at Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks. In a separate interview with Premiere, the filmmaker had pointed out that the MCU movies are too similar to each other.
"The problem today… well, if we're talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they're all cast in the same factory. It doesn't take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted," Villeneuve said.
Villeneuve isn't the only director who has strong things to say about comic book movies. Martin Scorsese had previously stated that superhero films are "not cinema." However, celebrities and fans have continued defending their favorite comic book movies.
Villeneuve's upcoming project is definitely not a comic book movie. Dune, the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert's work, will feature an all-star cast led by Timothee Chalamet. The film is scheduled to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021.
