The St. Mary’s Blues could be one of the surprise teams in Class 6A girls soccer and the leadership and play of co-captain Maggie Farra is a big reason why.

The senior center-forward has been an integral part of the program since joining four years ago, helping the Blues upset Sunset in the 2019 playoffs and excelling during the truncated 2020 season last spring.

The Oregonian/OregonLive conducted a question and answer session with Farra to learn a little more about her life off the field.

Sports background: “I started club soccer in fifth grade, which was a little later than most people. I started there and I used to play for Northeast United Soccer then I switched to FC Portland and played for their Elite Clubs National Soccer team. At St. Mary’s, I’ve played all four years. My freshman year I was on JV and swung to varsity with a couple other players and then sophomore and junior year I was on varsity and now my senior year I’m a co-captain.”

Sports hero: “I would say when I was younger I really looked up to the Thorn’s Christine Sinclair. The amount of goals she scored, the way she played. Her work ethic I always looked up to.”

Off the field interests: “I’m really interested in science. I’m also an Outdoor School leader, which hopefully I’ll be able to do this year. They’ll stay overnight at this camp and then there’s different field studies they learn about.”

Where do you want to go to college? “I just committed to Case Western Reserve University a couple days ago. It was really exciting, relieving to know I can play there.”

Career aspirations: “I’ll probably major in something science-y or engineering. I’m not completely sure yet. I really like chemistry, too.”

Favorite sports memory: “My sophomore year we beat Sunset in the first round of the playoffs and we beat them on penalty kicks. It was one of the best games that I think we played, and it was just really good because we’d never made it that far in the playoffs in so long.”

Why do you play soccer? “My teammates. I just really like playing with them and for all of them and working together to accomplish something together. I just really like something about that. My St. Mary’s team and my club team, they’re all just great people. I love spending time with them on and off the field.”
