SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. -- The Santa Rosa County School District have launched a new pilot program to improve bus safety on the roads.
The goal for the pilot program is to help monitor motorists that illegally pass by.
The school district has installed five cameras on school buses and hopes to install those cameras on all buses.
If you're driving and pass a bus while it's at a stop, you could be caught on camera and face a fine for at least $200.
Travis Fulton with Santa Rosa County Schools said, "as soon as the stop arm comes out, it sends a signal to the cameras, start recording. Then there's two in the middle about five feet off the ground and those are the ones that capture license plates."
The district says they've seen an average of 18 illegal passing every week since school started.
Virginia Sutler with Santa Rosa County Schools transportation said, "I'm hoping that it educates our community. A lot of people are not aware of it. They're distracted by their phones and radios and when they look up then they're passing the bus."
This pilot program is expected to last through September, with the expectation of adding cameras to all busses by the end of the year.
