FRIDAY UPDATES: Columbia, Mexico school districts report hundreds in coronavirus quarantine

Columbia and Mexico public schools are each reporting hundreds of students in quarantine because of coronavirus exposure.

Columbia Public Schools reported 416 students in coronavirus quarantine Friday morning , up from 367 on Thursday. The district reported 64 active coronavirus cases, up from 59 on Thursday. Eighteen of the district's 21 elementary schools are affected along with six of seven middle schools and all four high schools. The highest numbers of cases and quarantines are in elementary schools.

The district continues to see new cases and quarantines as experts say the delta variant is infecting more children than past variants . Masks are required in Columbia Public Schools for students and staff -- a mandate the school board extended this week.

Mexico Public Schools reported 215 students in quarantine and seven active cases as of Friday morning. The district has about 2,400 students compared to about 18,000 in CPS.

The Audrain County Health Department's weekly COVID-19 report this week said the county is in a high-risk category for coronavirus transmission. The county reported 51 active cases Wednesday, with 39 of those in Mexico alone.

The district does not require masks but encourages their use, according to its coronavirus plan.

More than 2,500 new cases of COVID-19 in Missouri

More than 2,500 people in Missouri have tested positive for COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.

According to data from the Missouri Department of Health Senior Services , 1,973 new coronavirus cases were found with the use of PCR testing.

Antigen testing revealed another 553 new cases of the virus.

The statewide seven-day positivity rate fell on Friday from 10.9% on Thursday to 10.5%

According to the state health department, there were 18 new virus-related deaths. At least 11,046 patients in Missouri have died have virus-related causes.

There are 1,943 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across the state. Officials reported 318 of the patients were on ventilators.

More than 2.8 million Missourians have completed the coronavirus vaccination process.

That's 46.6% of the state's population.
