A Marine veteran is recovering from a serious eye injury after being stabbed in the face while reportedly trying to defend a woman in a fight that broke out in a parking lot in Worcester on Sunday morning.
A GoFundMe has been sent up for the victim, Tyler Ferrara, who is recovering at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, according to the fundraiser.
Following initial treatment, the 26-year-old will need to undergo two more surgeries in an attempt to recover his vision, the fundraiser says. As of Thursday morning, more than $21,000 had been raised of its $50,000 goal.
According to the Worcester Police Department, around 2 a.m. on Sept. 12, an officer on a late night patrol was flagged for a report of a fight taking place in the parking lot of 73 Winter St., which is across the street from the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.
According to officials, a large crowd had gathered at the parking lot and the officer observed a “chaotic” scene.
The officer was then informed that someone had been stabbed in the face and a victim with a stab wound was located, police said.
The officer collected evidence and was given a description of the suspect who had reportedly fled, officials said. The victim was transported to the hospital with a serious eye injury, according to police.
Officers later located a male who matched the description of the suspect on Temple Street. As officers approached the suspect, he began to run in the direction of Grafton Street, authorities said.
Officers caught up with the suspect on Grafton Street by the Kenmore Diner, where he was taken into custody, police said.
A knife was recovered from the suspect, who was identified as Jason Rennie of Main Street. He faces charges of armed assault to murder, mayhem, two counts of possession of a per se dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace, officials said.
Tammy Ferrara, Tyler’s mother, told WBZ, her son has a long road ahead.
“Hopefully this man will stay in jail and my son will get his vision back,” she told WBZ.
Ferrara served in the Marine Corps for five years, has a 2-year-old son and had recently started a new job, according to the fundraiser.
