A 7-year-old girl grazed by a bullet on a Boston street in broad daylight is expected to survive, and the shooting left city officials angered.
The girl was walking home from school in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood at about 4 p.m. Thursday when her head was grazed, police said.
Only one shot was fired and emergency medical personnel determined she did not need to go to the hospital, police Deputy Superintendent James Miller said.
A man was taken into custody and faces charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. His name was not made public.
“This happened in the middle of the day on a school day and a 7-year-old child is now traumatized and a victim of gun violence,” Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins said. “Thank God it was a graze, but centimeters from there we would have had a very different crime scene.”
Rollins said it does not appear the girl was targeted.
“This is obviously a very tragic incident,” acting Mayor Kim Janey said at the scene. “Fortunately, the 7-year-old only has a graze.”
