Jonas Kaufmann has canceled the first performance of Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino” at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

The tenor took to social media to inform his fans that he contracted a tracheal infection and that he was advised by the doctors to rest his voice. He added that he hoped to sing the second and third performances of the opera but was not sure.

Kaufmann also said that he was not the type to take a step back and will wait until he is fully recovered.

The cancelation comes a day after Kaufmann canceled his performance of the Bayerische Staatsoper’s Opera for all opening season concert.

The company has yet to announce a replacement for Kaufmann. “La Forza del Destino” opens on Sept. 26 and is set to star Anja Harteros, George Petean, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Mika Kares, and Ambrogio Maestri.
