WASHINGTON – It has been an interesting month for Seth Romero, the lefty pitcher and first-round pick of the Nationals in 2017.
Then again, it has been an eventful career for the Texas native. He dealt with off-field issues at the University of Houston before he was selected by Washington.
Romero, who made his Major League debut in three games with Washington last year, has not pitched for Triple-A Rochester since August 27.
“He was down a little bit with shoulder fatigue; he’s dealing with some shoulder soreness but he’s fine,” Mark Scialabba, assistant general manager, player development, told Federal Baseball on Thursday.
Romero has also been away from the Red Wings for a few days after the birth of his first child, according to Scialabba. “He should be returning here soon,” Scialabba said.
The Red Wings are slated to end the season on October 3 at home.
Romero, 25, has pitched for four teams this year: one game for the Florida Complex League team, three for Single-A Fredericksburg, six for Double-A Harrisburg, and one for Rochester.
Overall, he is 0-2, 4.54 in 11 starts and he’s thrown 35.2 innings and has 55 strikeouts with 15 walks.
He has given up 43 hits, but just two homers, and has a WHIP of 1.63.
Romero made his Major League debut on August 13, 2020 for the Nationals at New York against the Mets.
In 2.2 innings last year for Washington, he had an ERA of 13.50.
Romero returned to the mound last fall in Instructional League to face hitters after he fell and hurt his right hand after making his Major League debut.
“He looked strong, threw strikes and mixed speeds well with his changeup and slider,” Scialabba told Federal Baseball in October.
Rochester improved to 45-68 with a 5-3 win over Buffalo on Thursday.
Right-hander Cade Cavalli went five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) to get the win while Rafael Bautista and Raudy Read hit homers for the Red Wings.
Read, a catcher who has been playing first base, had two hits and is hitting .326 at Triple-A while outfielder Victor Robles, batting in the leadoff spot, was 0-for-4 but is hitting .298 since he was sent to the minors. Robles was used as the designated hitter on Thursday.
