The Washington Football Team just barely squeaked by the New York Giants on a Thursday night primetime showdown. Dustin Hopkins played hero with a last-second field goal, but the story of the night was Taylor Heinicke, who stepped up for the injured Ryan Fitzpatrick and willed Washington to a victory.

After the game, Washington Football Team running back JD McKissic spoke highly of Heinicke, even putting him in the same breath as Russell Wilson, per Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk.

“He reminded me of Russell Wilson…He was calm. He wanted to make a play. He wanted to do anything it took. Only thing on his mind was winning.”

That is heavy praise for Heinicke, and he was surely calm on the evening. His final stat line was 34-46 for 336 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. But, he was relentless, calm and collected and led Washington on a beautiful two-minute drill that set up the game-winning field goal.

With Fitzpatrick out for eight weeks minimum, Heinicke has a golden opportunity to show Ron Rivera and the franchise why he could be the starting quarterback going forward, and Thursday night was a terrific start for him.

Next up for Washington is the Buffalo Bills, and that will be a huge test for Heinicke.
