JACKSON, MI -- The city of Jackson is continuing to sell properties it owns.

At its Tuesday, Sept. 14 meeting, the Jackson City Council approved the sale of six more properties totaling $101,500. The properties are 314 Carr St. ($15,000), 326 Carr St. ($30,000), 776 Tomlinson St. ($11,500), 1402 S. Elm Ave. ($20,000), 116 W. Prospect St. ($8,000) and 430 Madison St. ($17,000).

The sales on these properties have yet to close, Dimick said, adding that closings are set to occur by Oct. 15. After costs and outstanding debt, the city is expected to net $50,135, City Spokesman Aaron Dimick said.

Since the start of 2021, the city had owned about 600 properties, a majority coming to it through tax foreclosures. Between side lots and vacant structures, the city now has sold approximately 115 properties to date and continues to sell more, Dimick said.

A majority of structures sold by the city include fixer-upper homes, which are often described as needing “extensive repairs” in their listings. The properties can range from under $1,000 to $129,000.

The properties sold and closed on thus far, has earned the city $41,433 from side lots and $389,387 from other properties, Dimick said.

The funds generated from property sales first go to any outstanding debt from the property. Any further money goes into the city’s general fund to be used for a variety of city services, Dimick said.

People wanting to purchase any city-owned property cannot owe any fees to the city. Vacant lots owned by the city can be found through the county parcel viewer website.
