Patrik Berglund, a former first-round NHL draft pick whose stay in the league did not end well, has ended his contract with Brynas of Sweden's SHL. The team announced the two parties mutually agreed to part ways, saying it is the best thing for both sides.
In May of this year, it was reported that Berglund was facing some serious allegations from an ex-girlfriend. He was arrested and detained on charges of assault and rape. Berglund, through his lawyer, denied all of the allegations. Berglund also missed the latter part of last season after coming down with COVID-19.
In the NHL, Berglund had played for the St. Louis Blues for his entire career, but was traded to Buffalo in 2018 in the deal that sent Ryan O'Reilly to St. Louis. After 32 games with Buffalo, Berglund decided he did not want to play for the team. He was suspended indefinitely for failing to report and eventually had his contract terminated. He left $12.5 million on the table in order to return to Sweden. Berglund played more than 700 games in the NHL, recording 170 goals and 326 points. In July of 2020, he agreed to a two-year contract with Brynas after spending the previous season with Djurgardens.
Brynas Sports Director Johan Alcen was asked by
Sportbladet whether Berglund had plans to continue his pro career elsewhere. Alcen said that had not been discussed. The outlet attempted to reach Berglund but could not get in contact with him.
