One person killed in South Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after an overnight shooting in South Memphis.

Police say it happened on Ely street at East Person Avenue. Memphis Police say when they got on scene, they found a vehicle lying in a ditch. Inside, they found a man with a gunshot wound.

MPD says one other person was in the vehicle during the shooting, but they’re going to be ok.

Police say the shooting stemmed from an argument between the victim and a known suspect at another location.

This information comes as a surprise to people living in the area who knew the victim. One man, who did not want to be on camera, says he knew the victim’s family for years, and he says the victim did his best to stay out of trouble.

Roneta Davenport lives near where the shooting took place and says incidents such as this are common in this area.

“Sometimes you can’t sit out. I love my porch. Sometimes I hear shootings in the daytime and I go in and my neighbor goes in,” Davenport said. “You can’t move because it’s happening everywhere. It’s not where you live, it’s how you live.”

So far, no arrests have been made. If you know anything, contact Crime Stoppers at (901)-528-CASH.
