Mets Morning News: Phillies visit Queens

Your Friday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links

Meet the Mets

The Mets did not play a baseball game yesterday, which was probably in the best interest of everyone’s mental health following their demoralizing sweep at the feet of the Cardinals.

The Mets will resume playing baseball games tonight against the Phillies, who currently sit in second place in the division. A sweep would give the Mets life in both the divisional and wild-card races, while any other result would further decrease their already slim chances at a playoff spot.

Taijuan Walker is scheduled to pitch against Zack Wheeler, who is looking to make a last-minute Cy Young push.

Aaron Loup recently rekindled his love for the sport, partially fueled by an equal love for cheap beer.

Around the National League East

The Braves and Rockies were rained out of their game in Cobb County yesterday afternoon. With the Rockies out of the playoff picture and neither team sharing a day off for the rest of the season, the game will be made up on October 4th only if it is needed to decide the NL East race.

Bryce Harper went 3-4 with a home run and four RBI leading a 17-8 Phillies victory over the Cubs yesterday in Philadelphia.

Didi Gregorious believes his COVID-19 vaccine caused his current elbow problems, which some medical experts believe is illogical and likely incorrect.

The Nationals, Marlins, and Mets all enjoyed a day off yesterday.

After yesterday’s proceedings, the Mets currently sit 5.5 games behind the first-place Braves and 2.5 games behind the second-place Phillies.

Around Major League Baseball

The Pirates and Reds put on an offensive clinic as the Reds won 1-0 yesterday in Pitsburgh.

The Padres stayed afloat in the Wild Card standings with a 7-4 win over the Giants.

The Astros and Rangers finally settled who was the biggest cowboy in Texas with a 12-1 Astros victory in Arlington.

Though the Royals lost 7-2 to the Athletics, Salvador Pérez tied both the current lead and the all-time single-season record for primary catchers with his 45th home run yesterday.

The New York Times said some very nice things about Adam Wainwright, which was nice of them and not at all traumatizing.

Yesterday at Amazin’ Avenue

Brian continued some very important and rigorous analysis about two Mets position players that you’re not going to find anywhere else in sports media.

Grace reviewed “Ticket Home,” an E:60 special about one Mets fan’s involvement in the Iran Hostage Crisis and how baseball helped him navigate life after.

Brian and Chris explore the high of the Yankees series followed by the low of the Cardinals series in the latest episode of Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show).

This Date in Mets History

The Mets won the NL East on this day in 1986. And happy birthday John Franco!
