Jesse Lingard’s Manchester United career has been in question for the past few years, but it seems the club’s hierarchy and manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, would like to keep hold of him after all.

Lingard had an impressive half-season on loan at West Ham United, scoring nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances. His form nearly propelled him into the England squad for Euro 2020, but the forward just missed out on the final selection.

Since returning to Old Trafford, Lingard has mostly had a bench role but has scored a goal and returned to the England set-up, scoring twice.

After United’s shock Champions League loss to BSC Young Boys, where Lingard made a goal-costing mistake, Solskjaer confirmed that despite his error, they wanted to open talks for a new contract with the player.

"Jesse has come back to us after a great spell at West Ham. He showed his qualities, he’s got back into the England squad and he’s scoring goals for England. We really what to see the best of Jesse this season and we hope to see him, we support him, and we hope to keep him here with us.He’s got this season left of his contract and the club is talking to him and his dad.(via BBC Sport)"

The 28-year-old, Lingard, turned down a contract offer before the season and would be able to talk to clubs about a pre-contract agreement in January.

The forward has been at United since 2010 and graduated from their Academy to successfully play for the first team, and make several loan spells away from the club. Lingard has struggled for first-team action for the last few years, but his successful time in London has led him to be back in contention.

Lingard will have a lot to consider over the new contract offer, with playing time a question and the interest from West Ham United and others, still there.
