Broncos eager to face promising Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw three interceptions in a 37-21 loss to the Houston Texans in his first NFL game, but the rookie also totaled 332 passing yards and threw three touchdown passes.

It certainly wasn’t perfect, but Lawrence’s performance demonstrated his potential. He’ll be looking to show even more improvement against the Denver Broncos in Week 2.

“He definitely showed his talent,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday. “This guy has got a great future ahead of him. He made some great throws, some great plays. Sometimes, a game can get out of hand like that one did for a lot of reasons, but you definitely saw his talent and his ability.”

Similar to Fangio, Denver safety Justin Simmons had only positive things to say about Lawrence during his media availability this week.

“I’ve always thought Trevor Lawrence was a really good quarterback,” Simmons said. “Obviously, I’ve gotten a chance to see his film for a while now. He played at Clemson, but I’ve always thought he was a really good quarterback. He always seemed like he had this calm, poised demeanor while he’s back there progressing what the defense has given him.

“There’s always a learning curve almost at every single position, especially the quarterback position in the NFL. I’m really excited to play against him and see how we match up going down there.”

Broncos rookie cornerback Pat Surtain played against Lawrence in the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship. Lawrence and the Tigers got the best of Surtain and the Crimson Tide in that matchup, winning 44-16.

“Yeah, I started that game,” Surtain said Wednesday. “We were both freshman at the time — both young pups. He got the edge on us. We had our fair share of battles here and there.”

Surtain will aim to win his rematch with Lawrence in Jacksonville.
