High School roundup: Portsmouth hands Dover volleyball its first loss

PORTSMOUTH – Sophia Zingariello had 28 assists as the Portsmouth High School volleyball team handed Dover it first loss of the season, 3-2, on Thursday in a Division I contest. 

Individual game scores were 24-26, 25-20, 7-25, 25-20, 17-15. 

Margaret Montplaisir (nine kills), Caden Merwin (six blocks), Maggie MacDonald (five aces) led the Clippers. 

Tory Vitko led Dover with nine kills, 31 assists and 26 digs, while teammates Maggie Hurley (10 kills, four aces, four blocks) and Charlotte Abbott (seven kills, five aces) starred. 

VOLLEYBALL 

St. Thomas Aquinas 3 

Winnisquam 0 

DOVER – Sonya Engalichev and Maddy True combined for 67 kills in this Division II win for St. Thomas (3-2). 

Individual game scores were 25-9, 25-13 and 25-5. 

Enya Kaonga added 18 assists for the Saints. 

Somersworth 3 

Souhegan 1 

SOMERSWORTH - Junior Ariana Cuevas led Somersworth with seven kills and eight aces for Somersworth (2-2) in this Division II contest. 

Individual game scores were 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-14.

SACO, Maine – Sophomore Ella Holland, assisted by junior Brooke Salvail, scored the lone goal for Marshwood in this Class A South loss.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Isabelle Young’s two goals helped Marshwood to this Class A South win. 

Marshwood goalie Cameron Leveille had six saves, while teammate Aoife Coomey played well. 

BOYS SOCCER 

St. Thomas Aquinas 3 

Hillsboro-Deering 2 

DOVER – Logan More, Owen Simas and Brady Rogers all scored a goal for St. Thomas Aquinas (3-1-2) in this Division III contest. 

Simas and Marcus Bloom both had an assist. St. Thomas goalie Chris Gyurcsan had five saves, while defenseman Ryan Whiting made a goal-line stop on a rebound.

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Trevor Wozny, Wyatt Yager, Declan Fitzgerald, and Connor Sullivan all scored for Marshwood in this Class A South win. 

Laconia 3 

Somersworth 0 

SOMERSWORTH – Kyle Wilbur had 18 saves for the Hilltoppers in this Division III loss. 

Patrick Ives, William Sneddon, Nahum Yoder, Jacob Pincince and Simon Grandmaison all played well for Somersworth (0-6). 

GOLF 

Portsmouth wins three-team match 

HUDSON – Boden Driscoll shot a medalist round of 36 and led Portsmouth to this three-team victory at Whip-poor-Will Golf Course. 

Portsmouth had a team score of 201, while Alvirne (212) and Milford (237) placed second and third, respectively. 

Luke Cassell carded a 39 for the Clippers, while Jake Carlisle, James Becksted and Ryan Edwards all had a 42. 

Warriors place second in four-team event

NORTH HAMPTON – Winancunnet’s Jimmy Schouller shot a 38, tying for medalist honors in this four-team match at Sagamore-Hampton Golf Club. 

Windham won with a team score of 198. Winnacunnet (201), St. Thomas Aquinas (208) and Kingswood (209) placed second through fourth, respectively. 

Chris Berry carded a 39 for the Warriors, while June Doerr shot a 40, and Naish Kelly and Miles Pratt both had a 42. 

Lindsay Butkus had a 39 for the Saints, while Finn Connor, Tanner Petalas and Carlos Guenard all had a 42, and Xavier Allen had a 43. 

York 171 

Gray-New Gloucester 191 

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine – Tyler Conant shot a 36 and led York to this Class B win at Cape Neddick Country Club. 

York is now 2-4 on the season. 

Russell Henson (43), Alex Malinoski (44), Jack Jellison (46), Jim Neal (52) and Jakob Bergeron (53) all competed for the Wildcats.
